Trigger Point Injections (TPIs) are a treatment option to relieve muscle pain caused by knots, called trigger points, which can occur in your body. These trigger points are often the result of muscle strain, injury, or conditions like fibromyalgia. The procedure involves injecting a local anesthetic, such as lidocaine, directly into the tight muscle knot to relax the muscle and reduce pain. Sometimes, a corticosteroid is used if inflammation is a concern.
This treatment is used for pain in areas like the neck, back, arms, and legs. It's particularly helpful if you experience myofascial pain syndrome, which is a condition that causes pain from the muscle knots that worsen with touch. The injection procedure is relatively simple. You'll be positioned comfortably, and the doctor will locate the trigger points using gentle pressure to find the exact spots. Then, using a sterile technique, a needle is inserted into the muscle knot to inject the medication. You may feel a slight pinch or pressure.
Following the injection, it's best to avoid strenuous activities for a few days so your muscles can relax and heal. Pain relief might be immediate for some, but typically, you can expect to feel the full effects within 24 to 72 hours, lasting anywhere from one to four weeks. Some patients may need repeat treatments.
While TPIs are generally safe, some may experience temporary soreness or mild bruising at the injection site. More serious risks, like infection or allergic reactions, are rare. If you have concerns about medications or needle-based treatments, alternative methods like dry needling or physical therapy might be considered. This treatment is effective for many in reducing pain and improving mobility, and it can be an excellent addition to physical therapy for longer-lasting results.
