Pulsed Radiofrequency Ablation

Procedure | 1748908232

Pulsed Radiofrequency Ablation (Pulsed RFA) is a procedure designed to help reduce chronic pain by using radiofrequency energy to target certain nerves. Unlike traditional RFA, this process does not destroy the nerve but instead disrupts its ability to send pain signals.

This procedure is often used for pain in the lower back, neck, knees, or hips caused by conditions like arthritis, facet joint disease, or sacroiliac joint problems. It may be an option if physical therapy, medications, or other treatments haven’t provided relief.

During the procedure, you’ll lie down and may receive a mild sedative along with a local anesthetic to numb the area. Using fluoroscopy or ultrasound imaging, the doctor guides a thin needle to the affected nerve and applies pulsed radiofrequency energy. Pain relief typically begins within four to six weeks and may last six to twelve months. Because nerves regenerate, repeat treatments may be needed if pain returns.

Alternatives to Pulsed RFA include physical therapy, medications, steroid injections, nerve blocks, or, in severe cases, surgery. The best option depends on your condition and response to prior treatments.

Risks are low but can include temporary soreness, numbness, infection, or, in rare cases, nerve damage. Blood thinners may need to be stopped several days before the procedure, so check with your doctor.

Recovery is quick, and most patients return to normal activities within a day. If you experience fever, severe pain, or other unusual symptoms, contact your doctor.

If you’re struggling with chronic pain, Pulsed RFA may be a safe and effective non-surgical option. Our team is here to help guide you toward the best treatment for your needs.
