Pre/Post: Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) Peripheral Nerves

Pre/Post Procedure | 1775213691

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for Peripheral Nerve Pain is a minimally invasive procedure that uses controlled heat energy to target and deactivate specific peripheral nerves responsible for pain. This technique is commonly used to address chronic pain in areas such as the foot, ankle, knee, shoulder, neck, occipital region, and mid to lower back. Here's what you need to know about preparing for and recovering from this procedure.

If sedation is required, adhere to these standard NPO (nothing by mouth) guidelines: - No solid foods for 8 hours before the procedure. - No liquids for 2 hours before the procedure.

Your comfort is a priority. A local anesthetic will numb the targeted area to ensure minimal discomfort during the procedure. The medical team will ensure you are relaxed throughout.

Before the procedure, confirm with your provider whether you should continue or adjust any medications, especially blood thinners. Wear loose, comfortable clothing, and arrange for someone to drive you home if sedation is used.

Post-procedure, mild soreness is normal. Manage this with ice packs and pain medications as needed. Some patients may experience an initial increase in pain before improvement, which is normal.

Avoid strenuous activities for 48 hours to allow the treated area to settle. As there are no incisions, wound care is unnecessary.

A follow-up evaluation in 2 to 4 weeks will assess the treatment's effectiveness. RFA can provide significant relief, but peripheral nerves may regenerate, requiring repeat procedures up to twice a year for continued relief.

This procedure offers an effective option for long-term pain management in peripheral nerves. Following these guidelines ensures a smooth recovery and maximizes treatment benefits. Always consult your medical team with any concerns.
