A Peripheral Nerve Stimulation (PNS) permanent implant is a minimally invasive surgery where small electrical leads or wires are implanted under the skin near the nerve that stimulates a key spinal muscle—the multifidus. This procedure does not involve a trial phase. Candidacy is based on exam findings and imaging showing multifidus abnormalities. Here’s what you need to know before and after the procedure.
Preparation is key. Prioritize an anti-inflammatory diet and sleep for healing. Certain supplements may aid recovery. Avoid eating for 8 hours before and only take clear liquids up to 2 hours before. Follow your doctor’s advice on stopping blood thinners. Use a pre-surgical wash like Hibiclens® to reduce infection risk, and wear loose clothing. Arrange a ride home.
Post-surgery, keep the incision site dry and do not remove the bandage unless instructed. Opt for a sponge bath instead of showering. Avoid heavy lifting, repetitive motions, or excessive bending for 4-6 weeks. Expect small incisions possibly requiring suture removal at a follow-up.
Monitor pain levels and report changes at follow-up appointments. Support recovery with a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet, stay hydrated, and get 7-9 hours of sleep to enhance healing. Full results can take up to 6 months.
By following these guidelines, you’re ensuring a successful recovery. Contact your medical team with any concerns.
