Multifidus Muscle Dysfunction
Diagnosis | 1748908150
Multifidus muscle dysfunction refers to issues with a key muscle in your lower back responsible for keeping your spine stable. When this muscle isn't functioning well, it can lead to chronic low back pain. It's like the muscle forgets how to support your spine properly, often because of an injury or bad posture habits.
This muscle's job is to provide stability to your torso whenever you move. But sometimes, due to degeneration, injury or other factors, the nerves that tell this muscle to work can become disrupted, leading to discomfort and stiffness. This condition might cause you to experience ongoing back pain, especially when you try to move, bend, or even just stand.
To diagnose this problem, doctors may look at your medical history, conduct specific physical exams, and use imaging tests like MRI to check the muscle’s condition. Treatment often starts with physical therapy and exercises to strengthen the back and improve muscle function. Sometimes, a special device can be used to stimulate the muscle directly, helping it work correctly again.
This technique, known as peripheral nerve stimulation, has been approved for treating multifidus dysfunction and can significantly reduce pain. It provides continuous stimulation to the medial branch nerves without the need for medication.
If you’re experiencing persistent low back pain, it's important to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare team to explore the best treatment options for you.
