Interventional Pain Medicine- What is this?

Pain relief often starts with medications or repeat injections, but these are temporary solutions. Interventional pain medicine takes a different approach—it focuses on treating the source of pain using targeted procedures and minimally invasive treatments that provide longer-lasting relief.
The goal is to move patients away from long-term medication use and onto a multimodal management plan. This means combining different treatments, such as nerve blocks, regenerative medicine, and minimally invasive procedures, along with physical therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT, to improve function and reduce pain more effectively.
For example, if someone has chronic back or nerve pain, instead of relying on daily painkillers or frequent steroid injections, they may benefit from more permanent solutions like spinal cord stimulation, SCS, dorsal root ganglion stimulation, DRG, or peripheral nerve stimulation, PNS. These advanced treatments help block pain signals before they reach the brain, providing long-term relief.
By combining medical, physical, and psychological approaches, patients can often avoid or delay major surgery while significantly improving their quality of life. Interventional pain medicine shifts the focus from simply managing symptoms to actively improving long-term function. The goal isn’t just to reduce pain temporarily—it’s to help patients move better, think clearer, and regain control of their lives.
