Chronic Abdominal Pain

Diagnosis | 1775219053

Chronic abdominal pain refers to discomfort in the abdomen lasting over three months. It may appear in one area or spread across multiple regions, and requires careful evaluation to determine its cause. Sometimes, this pain can be due to gallbladder or pancreatic disease. Additionally, a history of previous surgeries in the abdomen may lead to adhesions, which are bands of tissue that can cause pain by restricting normal movement of the intestines. However, on some occasions, no specific cause can be identified, which is referred to as idiopathic pain.

The approach to managing chronic abdominal pain begins with conducting diagnostic tests, such as endoscopy, colonoscopy, and imaging like MRI or CT scans, to understand its origin. These tests help pinpoint whether the pain is related to issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastritis, or complications from surgeries.

Treatment varies depending on the cause and can include medications for pain relief, dietary adjustments, and sometimes surgery. For example, if gallbladder disease is confirmed, surgery to remove the gallbladder might be necessary. In more persistent cases, specialized procedures like nerve blocks can be beneficial. Nerve blocks such as celiac plexus blocks, used for upper abdominal pain, or superior hypogastric plexus blocks, for pain related to pelvic organs, target specific nerve pathways to manage and alleviate pain effectively.

Collaborating with healthcare professionals to uncover the cause enables receiving the most effective treatment, thereby improving quality of life and preventing potential complications.
