Bursa Injection

A bursa injection is a procedure where we inject medication directly into a bursa. Bursae are small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles near joints, and they can sometimes become inflamed, leading to pain. This procedure is used to relieve pain from conditions like bursitis or arthritis affecting major joints like the shoulder, hip, or knee.
During the injection, we carefully insert a needle into the bursa to deliver anti-inflammatory medication, usually a corticosteroid, which helps reduce swelling and pain. Regenerative options like PRP, bone marrow, or fat are also options. Occasionally, we'll also remove some fluid to relieve pressure and analyze it for further diagnosis.
While generally safe, this procedure carries some risks, including infection, bleeding, and temporary discomfort at the injection site. We also ensure sterile conditions to minimize any chance of infection, and we'll monitor you after the injection to manage any immediate reactions.
Most people experience some relief within a few days after the injection, and the effects can last for several weeks or months, depending on the individual and the specific condition being treated.
Before the procedure, you won't need any special preparation, but please let us know if you’re taking blood thinners or have any allergies. After the injection, we recommend you rest the joint for a day or so and apply ice if needed to help with any swelling.
If your symptoms persist or if you experience any significant side effects like increasing pain, fever, or swelling, be sure to reach out to us right away.
There are also alternative treatments we could consider if injections aren't suitable, such as physical therapy, oral medications, or exploring other forms of injections like those guided by ultrasound. But we'll work together to decide the best approach based on your specific situation.
If you have any further questions about the procedure or what to expect, feel free to ask. We're here to help and ensure you’re comfortable with your treatment plan.
